Biometric systems ISC West 2022: Cloud, AI and post-pandemic techs dominate

ISC West has long been known as a security technology mega-event. Each year the show demonstrates what’s hot in the industry. This year, the cloud and AI trends were clear, while biometrics and contactless access control solutions also received many inquiries.

Cloud

Needless to say, cloud has become a major trend in security due to its various benefits, including remote management, reduced capital expenditure and perceived better cybersecurity. Indeed, cloud was a main theme at ISC West this year.

“Cloud. Overwhelmingly the interest was in the ability to be able to use and manage video surveillance and access control remotely, moving away from legacy on-premises systems,” said Tom Buckley, Co-Founder of Qumulex. “At the Qumulex booth we were showing the latest version of QxControl, our cloud-based video surveillance and access control platform.”

“The first trend we saw was cloud. In fact, we had a cloud theme in our booth which we showcased together with our technology partners. We saw this trend being carried out by other organizations at the show, which are part of the broader Milestone community. Cloud-enabled solutions are gaining industry traction,” said Eric Moe, Director of Sales for North America at Milestone Systems.

Meanwhile, momentum is building around hybrid solutions, which combine the best of onsite and cloud technologies.

“While there has been much cloud talk in recent years, we are entering a new era where customers no longer have to choose between cloud or on-premises solutions. A new generation of edge-computing devices is about to enter the market, designed to allow customers to focus on their business needs and desired outcomes without being caught in the false dichotomy of cloud versus on-premises. For larger, multi-site operations, this new generation of plug-and-play hybrid solutions will instantly bring all sites together and make deployment and maintenance easier than ever,” said Kyle Hurt, Senior Sales Director for USA at Genetec.

AI

AI was another major theme at the show, as users increasingly realize its benefits in security.

“More and more, solutions are arising that include AI-based sensor analyses. With the increased shortage for skilled (security) employees, a solution is being found in more advanced analytics solutions. The standards from the Open Security & Safety Alliance are playing a vital role in the ramp-up of allowing such AI-based analytics applications to enter into our industry and onto our video sensors in a cyber-secure manner,” said Gijs van den Heuvel, Chair of Marketing at the Open Security & Safety Alliance (OSSA).

“Some of the noticeable trends at the show this year include advancements in analytics and AI,” said Larry Newman, Senior Director of Sales for Americas at Axis Communications. “When it comes to trends in AI and analytics, we’re excited that our ARTPEC-8 system-on-chip, designed for analytics based on deep learning at the edge, will be the foundation for Axis cameras moving forward. What’s more our recently launched AXIS Camera Application Platform (ACAP) version 4 is designed to facilitate the development of edge-based applications, so we’re excited to help advance the trend in AI and stimulate the application development community.”

“I definitely noticed a trend toward using AI for many different applications in the field,” said Yi Jin, VP of Marketing at Turing AI. “ISC West was Turing’s first opportunity to display our Vision AI platform to an audience of this size. And the response was terrific. Turing Ai provides a search and share function that’s as easy as using YouTube. And most importantly, once you find the person or vehicle of interest we set up an Alert whenever they appear on any property. A literal good guy- bad guy detector.”

Milesight, meanwhile, demonstrated how AI combined with IoT and 5G could benefit users.

“When AI meets IoT, or as we call it, AIoT, it will digitize and penetrate into every corner of our work and life, such as smart city, smart education, smart security, smart agriculture and smart factory,” said Leon Jiang, VP of Milesight. “Milesight 5G AIoT Camera is not only a simple image and video stream provider but also feels the temperature, water level and other data from the sensor, which is beyond data collection and also draws actionable insights.”

Contactless

Contact solutions also received many inquiries as people braced themselves for the post-pandemic world.

“HID Global displayed the latest innovations that included contactless building access and cloud-based solutions to more frictionless access experiences that have helped people safely return to work, school and other activities. The display highlighted the growing appeal of a mobile-first, touchless access experience, including solutions for contactless access to buildings such as employee badges and Student IDs in the Apple Wallet. HID also demonstrated multi-factor authentication solutions that extend Zero Trust security across the physical and digital worlds,” said Matt Winn, Senior Director for PR and Corporate Communications at HID Global.

“Touchless biometric readers and mobile credentials are in great demand and ZKTECO is well poised to deliver on both the hardware and software offerings,” said Manish Dalal, President of ZKTeco USA. “ZKTECO had on display our latest palm and facial recognition technology which is by far the best in our industry in terms of speed and accuracy. Every single visitor which had the opportunity to experience was amazed by the performance. We also launched Cronus- the world’s first turnstile and metal detector integrated in a single unit and got some great reviews of that.”

In the end, technologies like AI and cloud are only a means. Using them to make security end users’ job easier and more efficient is the real key.

“The convergence of physical security technology (video, access control, alarms, etc.) and emerging technologies (AI, analytics, hybrid-cloud solutions) is an important theme currently, as customers are looking for ways to connect and streamline their operations across various technologies. We are also seeing an increased demand for security systems that minimize the need for security administrators to watch video screens for hours on end, and instead can provide security teams with real-time alerts and data-rich insights so they can focus on making critical decisions,” said Alex Asnovich, Senior Director of Global Marketing for Video Security, Access Control and Critical Communications at Motorola Solutions. “Motorola Solutions showcased its integrated technology ecosystem that unifies voice, data, video security, AI-enabled analytics and access control solutions. Connecting these technologies offers communities, businesses, governments and public safety agencies more powerful ways to collaborate by removing data silos, streamlining operations and enabling security operators to detect, analyze, communicate and respond to incidents in real time.”
