An important element of the security and fire alarm system is fire detectors, which include smoke detectors, temperature detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors. When the sensor is triggered, the siren built into the smoke detector itself is activated or a signal is transmitted to the control panel (PPC). The control panel activates sound, light annunciators, an automatic fire extinguishing system (if any), notifies the owners or the fire department via GSM channels.

Types of smoke detectors

Fire detectors are distinguished depending on the type of sensor and the impact to which the siren reacts:

  • smoke (with photoelectric sensor). They include an emitter that generates a UV or IR beam, and a photocell that receives it. The work of the sensors is based on the fact that in case of smoke, the beam is reflected from the smoke, scattered and does not reach the photocell;
  • thermal (temperature). The fire temperature sensor reacts to an increase above the threshold value, too high an increase rate, or a combination of both;
  • carbon monoxide (CO), which is formed during a fire, in the event of a malfunction of gas equipment, poor draft in solid fuel boilers, stoves. Sensor action is based on air composition analysis.

There are also ultrasonic sensors that record the active movement of air masses in a fire, open flame sensors. But smoke and temperature detectors are more effective because they help to detect fires at an early stage.

In addition to the principle of detection, fire detectors are divided by the method of signal transmission into wired and wireless. According to the method of installation, they are all overhead, ceiling or wall-ceiling.
